JEWISH LISBON WALKING TOUR
Discover the Jewish History of Lisbon!
Come travel with us through time among the streets of Lisbon and discover Portugal’s rich and fascinating Jewish history. Our walking tour offers an authentic experience, revealing the secrets hidden among the buildings and sidewalks of the Jewish quarters of Lisbon that once had a vibrant Jewish life.
In addition to the cultural experience, visitors will learn about our Jewish community and understand more about our reality. Your participation contributes to sustainable tourism by supporting the Jewish institution that aims to promote and defend Jewish heritage of Portugal.
About our route
The journey begins at Miradouro das Portas do Sol with a stunning view of the city and a historical contextualization of Lisbon and the Jewish history of Portugal. Logically, we start at the viewpoint, as it is easier to go down the mountain from the castle than to go up there.
From there we will move towards the heart of Alfama, where visitors will see what the streets of medieval Lisbon looked like and will get to know a little about traditional Lisbon. On this part of the route, we will also visit Rua da Judiaria, the last medieval historical site in Lisbon, and the office of the Jewish Cultural Center.
This moment will allow us to rest and talk about the Jewish Golden Age in Portugal. Between the Jewish Quarter and Lisbon Cathedral, we will visit one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake of 1755 and two archaeological sites that prove the city’s historical richness.
At the cathedral, we will talk about the reconquest of Lisbon by Chrisrians and about the creation of the Jewish quarters. As we descend towards downtown, the central part of the historic area, we will pass different monuments until we reach Rossio.
At Rossio, we will talk about the historical events that took place in this area and about the fate of the Jews who stayed in Portugal after the Inquisition. We end the tour in São Domingos Square, the scene of the Jewish massacre, where the Jewish monument is located. Book now!
