CLASSIC LISBON WITH A JEWISH TOUCH

We made this walking tour for those who like to know everything about Lisbon and are thirsty for knowledge. The tour covers the main historic areas of the city where most of the monuments and historical sites are located: Castelo Hill, Alfama, Baixa, Rossio, Chiado, and Bairro Chiado.

On this tour, visitors will discover the major attractions of the historic area and discover the incredible Jewish history that once was vibrant in Lisbon. Briefly, we will cover about 2500 years of Lisbon’s history.

This tour is certainly the most complete, but it also requires the participants a bit more will to walk. That ‘s life. Once we want more, we have to give more of ourselves.

About our route

The journey begins at Miradouro das Portas do Sol with a stunning view over the city and a historical contextualization of Lisbon and the Jewish history of Portugal. From there we descend towards the heart of Alfama, where visitors will see what the streets of medieval Lisbon looked like and to get to know a little about traditional Lisbon

On this part of the route we will also visit Rua da Judiaria, the last medieval historical site in Lisbon, where the office of the Jewish Cultural Center is now located.

Between the Jewish quarter and Lisbon cathedral, we will visit one of a few buildings that survived the earthquake of 1755 and two archaeological sites that prove the city’s historical richness.

At the cathedral we will talk about the reconquest of Lisbon by Christians and about the creation of the Jewish quarters. As we walk towards the historical downtown we will pass different monuments until we reach Rossio. At Rossio we will talk about the historical events that took place in this area and about the fate of the Jews who stayed in Portugal after the Inquisition. Here we will visit Largo de São Domingos, the place of the Jewish massacre, where the Jewish monument is located.

After that we will continue towards the Santa Justa elevator, the first public elevator in Lisbon. At the end of the route we will pass by the Largo do Carmo, the site of the Carnation Revolution, the Carmo convent and the first Jewish quarter. We will also see Bertrand bookstore, the oldest bookstore in the world and Café A Brasileira, iconic coffee shop in Lisbon with the statue of Fernando Pessoa and Praça Luís de Camões
